seeing some cope from people here about the Thread launch and i think you're too far down the federated rabbit hole if you think meta doesn't have the best chance of capturing the zeitgeist of the post-twitter landscape. they're not just starting at 3rd base, they're starting 10 feet from home

Meta can use its mighty infrastructure to push it, but there’s no getting the stink of Facebook etc off of it. It will get a big start but even Meta can fvck up. They have before, many times.

realistically they have the best shot by nature of size but i think a lot of young people are really wary of using facebook at all, even if they're trying to brand it as instagram, but maybe i'm too online 🤷‍♀️

I don't doubt that, but the point of leaving Twitter for those who want to are similar reasons for leaving Facebook: a blatant algorithmic preference for conservative views at the expense of minority communities' safety. Not sure who the audience is.

Maybe, but dear god IG is entirely unusable, and FB has lost 80% of its functionality since 2007. Meta is completely dogshit but it might be too big to fail.

It seems like it was the obvious move from them too w/ how bad things are going on the Bird App. I think Bluesky will probably end up with the better community but Thread will have the scale.

Instagram’s long term issues with moderation make me wary but I’m also very aware that like, only a very small percentage of the existing userbase on the entire internet cares about that

Don't overthink it. The formula is simple: adaption without avarice. This will lead to steady adoption. It doesn't need to happen overnight. It's best that it doesn't. But the evolution will be lightspeed in comparison to other evolutionary journeys. Enjoy the ride! WTF else are you going to do? 👍😁👍
