Is it just me, or does this sound like an easy way to force all twitter users into age / ID verification to comply with the insanely bad laws that certain states are passing to “protect the kids”, but are definitely not about protecting the kids?

The changes appear to confirm the earlier tests of NSFW communities spotted by various researchers and reverse engineers.

If that is the end goal, I will happily dump X after 17 years on the platform (yes I am still using it).
