About to lead a tour for a party of four. Birthday treat for one of them. We'll be exploring the area of Leeds depicted here by the Giles brothers in 1815, the early days of industrialisation. So many changes since then, but we'll still be able to work out where we are when we look at this map.

I really really love the brutalist buildings our campus at University of #Leeds#linoprint#UKart#art#brutalism

A linoprint in black ink of the Roger Stevens building in Leeds. Itā€™s a brutalist masterpiece.

OTD 1853 opening of St Georgeā€™s Hall, Bradford. Leeds, hearing of plans for their neighbours' hall, was stung into building an even grander hall for the town that could ā€œjustly be considered the capital of the NE of Englandā€ ā€“ John Marshall, flax spinning entrepreneur, 1826. @thevicsoc.bsky.social

Exterior and interior illustrations of St George's Hall, Bradford and Leeds Town Hall. Both are neo-classical designs. Leeds added a grand tower - at the suggestion of Sir Charles Barry, who oversaw the architectural competition. The watercolour of the interior of the Victoria Hall, Leeds, was by Cuthbert Brodrick (1821-1905), the Hull architect who won the competition. The Bradford hall was designed by Lockwood and Mawson. Brodrick had been a pupil of Mawson in Hull. Leeds sculptor Robert Mawer worked on both buildings.

Comeuppance for a nasty piece of work - the proposal & the man. The most unacceptable kind of alliance between political & commercial power. šŸ‘ Republicans standing up for nature. Examine other ruthless characters & their misdeeds? Consider which party is more likely to protect the planet? šŸŒŽ šŸŒ šŸŒ

ā€˜This was a terrible ideaā€™: the incident that broke Republicansā€™ DeSantis fever

Ironically named Great Outdoors Initiative that would pave over acres of state parks sent steadfast allies over the edge

Great to hear @DanNeidle say on @BBCPM that #LandTax is a good tax - fair, practical (though not without difficulties), effective. Though he acknowledges that it's politically tricky.
