MPs have two principal roles: as legislators and to hold the Government to account. The arrogance of any Government in assuming that its legislation cannot be improved by backbench MPs is remarkable.
I’ve long argued that select committees and those with specialist knowledge should be proactive in tabling amendments so that legislation is properly debated.
Might you not add to that: representation of their constituents… which might have consequences on particularly emotive subjects, like the two child benefit limit?
