HAIKYU!! THE DUMPSTER BATTLE: Wish sports were remotely as fun in reality as they are in anime. Fumbles momentum & pacing, but last few moments are such an out-of-body emotional gut-punch. Just visceral desperation to keep things going despite inescapable exhaustion.
I'm honestly not bothered by the fact Patel handles the trans representation relatively schematically. It's clear the support & investment is there, especially with how prominently he spotlights the Hijra community. And I do appreciate the violent defiance to violent suppression.
MONKEY MAN: On the one hand, Dev Patel's action sensibilities lean too much towards 90s/early 00s edgy action brutalism for my tastes. On the other hand, he does inspire an army of trans people to slaughter corrupt cops, politicians & cult leaders. Which isn't NOT to my tastes, either.

Caden Mark Gardner and I are very happy to announce that there is a brand new edition of Body Talk and it is on Vera Drew's incendiary trans coming of age film THE PEOPLE'S JOKER. reverseshot.org/features/321...
This film is incendiary, but it should be discussed not just for its controversy. What makes this film significant is how it engages with the iconography of IP superhero blockbuster cinema and with th...
I don’t trust the industry to give Lily Gladstone the opportunities she deserves in the future. That’s where my upset over this loss stems most from.
KUNG FU PANDA 4: When the worst film in the series is still more insanely fun & endearing than most, as messy & hamstrung as it is. They put the director of SHREK THE THIRD in charge, and it's still really good with stellar craft, action & humor. Promote the co-director next time, tho.
DRIVE-AWAY DYKES: Lotsa things I knew this'd be & was quite pleased to see - joyously lurid B-movie aesthetics, hysterically argumentative humor, erotic lesbianism. I didn't think it'd also be this incredibly sensitive, searching rom-com. Qualley & Viswanathan are amazing. Slotnick & Wilson, too.
Lol, well they'd be on my list regardless, given letterboxd scores are calling the shots, but needless to say I'm a big fan of 'em. RE: Afterlife's an all-timer for me.
Alright, I updated my list of the 100 Lowest-Rated Films I've Seen on Letterboxd. Which means it's time to admit that I'm apparently WISH's sole champion! Look, I only think it's decent & has some intriguingly messy qualities! I didn't ask for this shit! letterboxd.com/l_frances/li...
Also probably - unfortunately - doubles as a Paul W.S. Anderson ranking. For scale, 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' is one of my absolute favourites, everything #55 and above I think have at least SOME…
It is sincerely aiding my ongoing emotional health knowing that, at some point in 2024, we're getting Paul W.S. Anderson's IN THE LOST LANDS starring absolute icons Dave Bautista and Milla Jovovich. On that day, I will know true peace.
