I find the "mainstream" nature of nuclear war fears in the early 1980s, and the way they "bled" into the zeitgeist, fascinating. It's a little hard for me to imagine successful pop songs about nuclear war today. open.substack.com/pub/doomsday...

In the late 1950s, there were several cases of "nuclear false alarms," where large numbers of Americans were exposed to warnings that nuclear war was taking place. This study from 1961 looks at what people did, and didn't do, when they got the signal. open.substack.com/pub/doomsday...
