There's no objectively right way to write alt text. In my opinion, however, it should meaningfully convey the core information that one would get from looking at the image, so I would put a basic description of your character!

No, it actually serves both functions: a screen reader will read it out loud, and if the image doesn't load it is shown in its place. Thanks for taking the effort to write alt text, it is really useful
