Ideally: Your capricious, weird, uneven humanity is what will make people love you, and that is what will give you a team, and your team is what will make your life full and difficult and glorious. Your job when you are twelve goddamn years old is to prepare for that.
I think about this message someone shared online all the time when it comes to parenting my kids. I don’t know if it’s “right” but it feels much closer than that garbage.
I was a kid who decided to optimize my childhood so I could take off after 18 when I'd finally be free to explore the world. Anyway there was 0 to do & nobody to do it w/ in my village. Concentrated on a sport that might pay me to live in Europe & got v good at it. Never once got a chance to play.
These messages are so depressing. As a lifelong generalist, I resent how much our society celebrates and emphasizes specialists. Life is a journey, not a destination.
