We are thrilled to be hosting Wendy Pearlman to discuss her new book on the Syrian diaspora, and to have Syrian activist and scholar Ibrahim Al-Assil provide comments. Join me, SAIS Middle East Studies, and our SAIS MENA Club for this important discussion Thursday Sept 19 at 12:00pm!

Today we finished the 75th week of our Zoom writing solidarity group. I’m glad to be back to my whiteboard in DC to help keep track of our (19!) sessions and awesome volunteer hosts. Please send any MENA scholar who might benefit my way, happy to answer any questions!

This was the topic of a couple final papers in my Politics of Protest in Europe course. I had a bunch of MENA concentrators, and encouraged them to write on Europe-based solidarity protests with MENA. From what I see, in Ireland the anti-colonial struggle frame was quite resonant.

Agreed. I think a lot of the outrage is fear of the “unknown” and capitalizations on that. An unbelievable number of men don’t know how tampons or even menstruation cycles work. The right wing wields this powerfully.

It’s a tiny thing, but you are more than welcome to join the Zoom writing solidarity and accountability group I run. I was unable to get a MENA group going and so expanded my post-earthquake Turkey/Syria group to all from MENA. Please let me know if you are interested!
