Not gonna lie, I kind of miss when licensed games were common. Seems like they're super rare these days. The irony is that the grand majority of them really weren't as terrible as you might have been lead to believe, just kind of meh in comparison to other titles. (there were bad ones though)

Still waiting for a Sheep, Dog 'n' Wolf remake, one of the best games on the PS1 (according to me)

having played many licensed games, i agree, most of them are just okay. there are some bad ones too, of course, but if you dig a little deeper, there are gems to be found.

Some of them were even genuinely good, though it's been so long since I last played any that I'm drawing a blank on any to highlight.

I love the OG SpongeBob BFBB but I hate the remake. They somehow messed with the platforming physics and there's a few missing bits of animation (like the boxes not closing to teleport you, now they just cut to black). The original is a bit less colorful but just has better character to it.

that small period of time at the end of the 360 era actually had some bangers, the mad max game comes to mind depite over half of its dev time being thrown out because the publisher wanted a linear action adventure (????). plus in the 90/00s starwars games were legitimately innovative

I feel like, at least in the West, they are all coalescing around a few major universes (Star Wars and Marvel, mostly).

I still long for the halcyon NES days when a pizza mascot could get a tie-in platformer.
