if you have ever been to Asheville or Black Mountain, North Carolina, you know that they are centers of excellence and innovation in crafts if you love fine crafts, maybe think about supporting the artists affected there

We're four days into the most significant natural disaster in the recorded history of our region. Our community is experiencing an ongoing crisis created by infrastructural collapse and the profound failure of capitalism to value and sustain life. 1/?

A photo of Firestorm Books' front door. Cardboard signs taped to the glass read: "Info & Resource Sharing, Daily 12-4. Please do not leave donations outside of this time frame. Community meetings @ 2pm around back in parking lot area. Community Board: Share info, requests, resources, etc." Inside the building piles of supplies are visible.

@tinu.bsky.social and I had talked at one point about pitching a presentation to a cancer organization to talk about financial toxicity and race and disability justice. It never happened but my heart sends her on her way home with deep appreciation and respect.

I don't think I've ever known anyone to be so fierce in her beliefs and activism while embodying grace and generosity as Tinu she deserved better she deserved a society that doesn't discard sick people like pens that have run out of ink she deserved years with her family rip Tinu

Blessed be the memory of Tinu Abayomi-Paul. Activist. Writer. Parent. Daughter. Killed by long covid, cancer, and systems that just don’t care enough about the most vulnerable of us. Her powerful legacy lives on. @tinu.bsky.social#rip

In loving memory Atinuke Abayomi-Paul. 52 wonderful years. Smiling portrait of Tinu, a Black woman with a lovely round face, wearing glasses.

*raises hand in 2008 iowa flood* If you are lucky, it only takes months to rebuild your life, but usually up to a year to feel normal again, but you're always left with a sense of grief for things you can never get back and a continual anxiety of experiencing that disaster again.

I will add that one should be careful when addressing community trauma in the wake of natural disasters. You aren't just addressing people who are in the current wake of experiencing community trauma. You're also addressing those of us who have experienced community trauma in the past.
