One novel finding is that our survey in South Korea was fielded during the Trump assasination attempt. We were able to see how the event changed responses towards Trump and Biden:
However, one of our more troubling findings, something that is consistent with @HsinHsinPan_TW's important research, is that Taiwanese respondents have low levels of trust towards the US despite many believing the US will intervene in a conflict with China.
We also ask if people in Taiwan and South Korea feel that the US will only intervene in a conflict if Biden or Trump are president. We find that most feel that if the US intervenes, it will do so regardless of who is president.
We see similar results when it comes to who is better for global peace and security. This survey was also conducted before Trump's comments about Taiwan needing to pay the US more for protection, which I anticipate would have only given Trump even lower numbers.
If you were to ask the foreign policy community who Taiwan prefers, Trump or Biden, most would say Trump. That is because in 2020 Taiwan was the one place who preferred Trump to Biden. That has changed. Not only is there not strong support for Trump, Biden polled better than him.
🚨New survey data on how Taiwan & South Korea see Trump, Biden, Democrats, Republicans, and the USA🚨 Contrary to old 2020 narratives, Biden & Dems are more popular than Trump & Reps across the board. A🧵on @hannahjunekim , @poscwty and I's latest: www.brookings.edu/articles/how...
How Taiwan and South Korea feel about the Trump and Biden administrations offers insight into how two close partners believe the election’s outcome will impact them.
* absolutely not an endorsement of those conspiracies, what matters to me more is how these event are used / will be used to further polarize and erode faith in democratic institutions.
