The lesson we should take away from the Luddite movement is that productivity-improving technologies can be extremely disruptive to people whose labor they're a substitute for, but because those technologies are so valuable to society as a whole (since they allow society to produce more with less)
we love technology. we do not love the people purposefully immiserating us with that technology
When I visited Nottingham this year I was surprised to find that the Luddites were actually skilled machinery operators campaigning against exploitation rather than people against machinery in general. Amazing how their reputation is so badly wrong.
