70 people were reportedly killed in a gang attack in central Haiti on Thursday. Meanwhile, in the city of Canaan, 57 miles south of the massacre, residents struggle to survive violence in a city they built from scratch, a place they hoped would be an oasis from their country's descent into chaos.

Canaan resident Evenson Louis says they don’t have much hope left for Canaan. “These gangs are the children of the state,” he says, explaining that the Haitian government created the gangs by arming them with guns sold to them by the police.
