1/3 I am absolutely in love with Out of Joint, Joan Tanner’s show SBMA. There is so much ocean in it, a sense of buoyancy but also drag. Some large scale sculptures are secured with lines like sailing rigs. Others, made from mesh & metal, recall the fishing nets and trash that clog our oceans.

/3 Finally, her small scale sculptures, strange amalgamations of flotsam and jetsam captured in glass bubbles that both magnify and obscure their contents.

2/3 Then there are her paintings, islands of form floating on a canvas, inviting the viewer to wonder what might lay in these unexplored lands of graphite and oil stick.
