The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov. I knew that I was going to lend it to my friends, so I bought a few extra second-hand copies just for that.

That's Elizabeth Peters' pen name! I love her so much - her Amelia Peters books about a middle-aged Egyptologist. That series was formative for me.
