In the Phoenix metro area, ProPublica found that the poorer the ZIP code, the fewer school vouchers are being used. One reason? Only 6 of the county’s 200+ private schools are in areas where families earn less than 50% of the county’s median income.

If she wanted to send her third grader to the one school that does provide partial free lunch, she'd have to send him alone on a public city bus for 30-40 minutes each way.
We looked specifically at one south Phoenix mom's options for her kids... there are four private elementary schools within three miles of her home. None of them were practical for her because they don't provide free lunch or transportation like public schools.
For our new @propublica.bsky.social story on access to school vouchers in AZ, we compared the # of vouchers used and median income in each ZIP code. The lowest income ZIPs often used < 2 vouchers per 100 kids. The highest income ZIPs used as many as 28 (!) vouchers per 100 kids.
