A new study suggests that fully remote workers may produce less than half the climate-warming emissions of people who spend their days in offices. www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solu...

Chart showing emissions from different work models calculated as daily carbon footprint per capita, in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents.

I'm not convinced. Does the study factor in methane emissions from dodgy diets? As someone who's worked remotely for 20 years, I can attest to the fact that it's very difficult to maintain a healthy, balanced diet when your office is in the next room.

Working from home can reduce climate emissions. Working from home keeps employees and their families safer from COVID-19. But CEOs are forcing workers to return to the office so that they can protect real estate profits.

I think it makes sense! Interesting to see the graph. But one should never underestimate the effects of a good (repeat: good!) office environment on mental health. I'd rather have a fully green electrified, well-functioning public transport system than not meeting my colleagues in the office.

Does this take climate into account? I mean.. not climate change, climate itself. Like, in Ireland you pretty much need the heating on most of the day from October to April, and if you are rich you'll have air con in the summer, but almost no one does right now because it's not life / death yet

We’re getting to the point we cannot sustain the vehicle infrastructure. The waste, trash alone is mind boggling. Why would employers think their employees are ok with spending hours in traffic just to get to and from work. Do employers share the costs of gas, parking, vehicle maintenance, insurance

Hell yeah

There would be some rebound over time. When people can work fully remote, more will choose to move out of cities. They still won't be commuting to work, but their travel to everything else increases. I don't know how big this effect would be, but it might become important to model it.
