Literally every time they pull that shit this is what I envision
Worked last time. Barely.

I find "only viable candidate who will peacefully leave office at the expiration of their term" to be a great pitch. I can't think of a more compelling one, really.
this was also their best pitch in 2020 and 2016 and 2012...
"We're imperfect but better than those other guys" is a very effective pitch for a very large percentage of the electorate. And with me too. When it's a choice between "meh, kinda old, kinda wishy-washy" and "literally wants to be Fuhrer instead of President," Wishy-Washy gets my vote every time.
Establishment Dems either too scared to step on the toes of the wealthy and powerful for fear they'll lose the campaign funding wars or that they won't be able to enrich themselves. Or both.
The real issue is that historically, incumbency is a HUGE advantage. Someone else essentially needs to be 10 points better than Biden in order to have the same outcome if they replaced him.
I'd have thought the whole Handmaids Tale - Gilead thing the religious right hope to bring in might have been enough. Or the anti-science non-Dem Dem Independent loon to vote that way... That they don't especially feel the need to do much, sucks, but the alternatives are so much worse.
"C'mon we're not them, right?"* *questionable
