I've seen audiences go along with main character making some truly awful, irrational decisions, and then turn around and work themselves into a tizzy about side characters not being 100% understanding, reasonable and unquestioningly supportive at all times.

This happens even when the characters in question don't have the same information the audience has. This happens even when the narrative framing sides with the side characters. And it happens most frequently and most egregiously to female characters, especially wives and girlfriends of male protags.
