This is amazing - and a great fact, do you have a link to the data somewhere?!
Something we often hear when we're talking about cycling infrastructure is that itās ableist. That it only allows the physically fit to use their streets; to the exclusion of everyone else especially the elderly or disabled. It's worth pushing back on that idea on several levels. š§µ
I'm in that role too, and it's a bit boggling to hear Uni's / higher management are ambivalent about this.
I can see Erasmus 2.0 not looking great if it means a drop in OS student income - but some kind of mobility / mutual exchange scheme would be so great & would unlock a lot of opportunities on both sides. Public polling is also pretty consistently positive about offering these experiences to youth.
Previously v.simple agreements that just worked because the framework was the same now require rounds of negotiation & escalation as Unis need to minimise jurisdictional issues. Weird local laws around civil & private & worker liability suddenly appear. It's needless sand in the machinery.
For me in that role, the main issues are that Turing money is unpredictable & incredibly short term & the visa situation in the EU for our students is now silly - some places just don't have the cat (You're employed & a student?! No: You're neither!) & insurance / contractual wrinkles abound.
This is AIUI the same issue Biden is having in the US. "But muh GDP" doesn't cut it when inflation was 7-15% for a year and a bit and your wages grew maybe 3-4% or (gasp) nearly 7% if you were very lucky. Also - the point of a lot of monetary policy is to erode buying power to tackle inflation.
A UK-EU youth mobility scheme would give young people back the opportunities that were stripped away by a Brexit they didn't (or couldn't) vote for. The UK already has schemes with 13 other countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand & India. They are nothing new.
āThere was this sense of disillusionment, that Iād grown up feeling very European. But weād had these rights taken away before a lot of my generation could even understand politics.ā Young Brits are missing out because of a Brexit they didn't vote for. www.theguardian.com/society/2024...
Once seen as a rite of passage, seasonal jobs in the rest of Europe are off limits for many ā but some still make it work
