The Guardian reports that Ministers are planning to address the earnings cliff-edge in carer's allowance. Good! It's hard to defend the current system. We argued last week that it would be better to have the payment subject to some sort of taper instead. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024...

The important thing with this inflation figure is that the September number is what they use to update most benefits in the spring. So a very low rise (1.7%) for people on the lowest incomes next year

Having tried, it is like the old Not the Nine O'clock News sketch where a minister is announcing the unemployment figures on television. "ohhhhh, God." Taxes just have to go up, given where inflation is.

It's interesting to muse that fringes of both the left and right make this mistake - just in different ways.

Once you stop talking about ethnic minorities as a homogenous blob and look into the differences between groups, you get a proper complex picture of what multicultural Britain is actually like. Spoiler: it's so much weirder than you think. tiny.cc/mzvpzz

I remember hearing of this idea of a 'zone of influence' or similar. Basically the environment young people are able to exist and how it has shrunk to basically the house. But people who are allowed to physically 'roam' have less screen time and are happier. Can' remember where I saw it now...
