A few people have asked me why I won't relocate for a games job. 'It's a great opportunity!' etc., etc., etc. So here's a thread about it. 1/?
Great thread. I think a lot of people also forget that moving can also harm any medical things you have set up. If you've been on say, a waiting list for MH support for two years, moving will reset that and you'll have to start all over again.
Great opportunity my ass. I'm literally trying to jump ship from the games industry because it's a sinking ship and I have zero confidence in my ability to find sustainable employment in it when I do inevitably leave my current job.
there was a time when i would've relocated, as long as it was somewhere safe. now? with all the layoffs? having to sacrifice what stability i've managed to get in years? hell no i dont know if i'd even take a remote job solely because there's a chance i'd be laid off to appease shareholders
Very insightful story. I'm 27 and thinking about getting into the games industry. But I'm still hesitant considering all the news recently. I think I'm at a point in my life I can still risk a bit. But this time frame is closing by the minute. Though decisions 😑. But thanks again for sharing!
Let's put aside the fact that I have a partner who also works in games who has a full time, in-office job. That I have aging parents and in-laws that will probably need some kind of help/support sooner rather than later. That I have a mortgage and friends and a really good therapist. Y'know, a life.
