Sten learnt runesmithing in order to inscribe his guns with magical energies. In trying to make his jezail "Jessie" silent he inscribed the rune for Silence|Emptiness|Void. Unfortunately do to a misunderstanding of nuance that did not make the rifle silent, it made it steal souls.
