These questions of framing are esp. applicable to stories of war & conquest. Case in point: those of us in Western societies have historically been fed stories of colonialism as tales of adventure and discovery — not of genocide and plunder.

Also, as people have pointed out, if this was about keeping her staff paid, Barrymore — among Hollywood's highest paid actors + part of an acting dynasty — likely could afford to pay them, instead of putting them in the position of crossing a picket line.

People don't seem to realize how much writing is involved in talk shows: intros, monologues, sketches, questions for the guests, etc. — that's all writing! So if she and/or her producers are doing it, they're replacing the work of union members!

When I asked who's now doing the show's writing & if it's using scab writers, a CBS rep said: “The Drew Barrymore Show will not be performing any writing work covered by the WGA strike.” The writers are WGA film/TV members, so the show is struck work.
