In my personal experience my committee did a phenomenal job tailoring my oral exam specifically to my thesis. certainly required a lot more active effort and time investment into my study area for them to keep up to date with the literature :) individualized at the PhD level has pros, but ⏱️💪
UCLA EEB was a total choose your own adventure (they stuck to the min. state wide recs 24 units). Personally this was freeing to focus more time on research & take courses I wanted (Leadership in Sustainability). Was great for research (I knew my project), I do feel like I missed some fundamentals🤷
