Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door contains a pipe that turns every follower into Punio when they walk through it. If glitches or cheats are used to have any follower except Punio during this scene, they will permanently turn into Punio upon emerging from the other end.

Does this happen in the remake too?

...That makes sense, actually. If an exit is only ever meant to be used by Punio, why make separate case-handling for anyone else? When you say 'permanently', does that mean this persists even after the related segment is done with? Could you maybe turn it in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Plus Punios?
