... and then British Pathe overlays every single one with a push for just one other video from the collection, the overlay inevitably covering the portion of the film that the viewer actually wanted to see. Sigh.

If you mean the card overlay at the end of the video, that's a youtube thing and I don't think you can disable that as an uploader. I never see them because I watch youtube in a different client.
