Spinosaurids in general seem to have had lengthy necks (at least, relative to other large theropods). We don't have much neck material for Spinosaurus but the (lost) holotype shows us the size of a cervical vertebra relative to those of the body. A long neck seems probable.

My feeling is that the Protoceratops-griffin idea is dead in the water at this point, but there's growing interest in geomythology and I'm sure there's plenty of fascinating discussion of other geomyths to come!
