Try watching some of the early episodes of Morse! The biggest problem with the older TV stuff is that it was shot in 4:3, whereas more recent stuff is shot in 16:9, which is essentially the same difference as watching a movie in the cinema between what was called widescreen* and cinemascope

*widescreen was the format introduced in the early 20th century, as it was then described, where the screen became slightly rectangular (slightly wider than it was taller) instead of square with rounded corners as it was before that
