Subtitles should always retain the essence of the original language. If something doesn’t translate well no matter what, or if it loses the essence by translating, leave it as is in the subtitles. An easy example are Japanese honorifics #weebwednesday

Like one of the most fun parts of Fruits Basket for me was seeing how the characters change the way they address each other as their relationships evolve. Thankfully they retained honorifics on these subs, but other shows (at least on Crunchyroll) completely get rid of it
