4/11 a) the absence of a stimulus, or b) a failure to see a stimulus that is actually there. To decide which one it is, we need to answer the question “how likely was I to see a stimulus if one was present?”

3/11 As a test case for the influence of beliefs about perception on perceptual inference, we focused on decisions based on the absence of evidence. Such decisions are particularly hard because the absence of evidence can reflect one of two things:

2/11 For such inference to take place, we need access to the “perceptual likelihood function”: a probabilistic mapping from states of the world to sensations. This way, our meta-perceptual model of our own sensory system can affect perception itself.

1/11 According to Bayesian, inverse-optics accounts of perception, what feels like direct perception is nothing less than the result of a complex model-inversion process, answering the question “what state of the world produced this impression on my sense organs?”

How do we infer perceptual absences? Do beliefs about perception play a role in such inferences? And how does it all relate to cellist Natalia Gutman’s career decisions? Find answers in our new preprint with Rani Moran and @clarepress.bsky.socialosf.io/preprints/ps... A 🧵
