14C in tree rings tells us about the Sun in the distant past. But the data are problematic after ~1900 due to burning fossil fuels. And modern records only go back to ~1950. How do we bridge this gap? We can use 175-yrs of ground-based magnetometers. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Bridging the gap between 14C and instrumental heliospheric modulation potential (phi) estimates. All time series are annual resolution. Grey- and white-shaded regions show even- and odd-numbered solar cycles, respectively (from minimum to minimum). The neutron-monitor (NM)-based phi estimate of from U2017 is shown in blue. The uncertain Usoskin, Bazilevskaya, and Kovaltsov (2011) phi extension based on ionisation chamber (IC) data is shown as a red dashed line. Black shows the 14C-based phi estimates from Brehm et al. (2021) estimate with 1-sigma uncertainty (grey). the dashed lines indicate the approximate period of increased uncertainty in 14C phi due to dilution of natural 14C in the atmosphere due to burning of fossil fuels. A gap exists between the reliable instrumental-based estimates (NM and/or IC) and 14C estimates of phi.
