Juniper titmouse in a spot of sunlight, Mesa Arch Trail in Canyonlands National Park, Utah. The Merlin app describes them as "Possibly the plainest bird in North America...Despite dull plumage it is undeniably cute..." #birds

Vermilion flycatcher (female), Jackson Flat Reservoir near Kanab, Utah. I didn't know what bird this was when I was photographing her (TBH this is often true), but I knew I'd never seen one. She posed very cooperatively, and the just-before-sunset light was perfect. #birds

Black-crowned night heron, Audubon Center at Riverlands, Missouri. This is only the second adult I've ever seen, and the first (at Chincoteague) flushed as soon as I saw it. #birds#herons
