New Jersey provided an incentive to local school boards to move their elections to the general. The carrot was that boards could raise the school tax by up to 2% without a budget referendum.

I've lobbied to get ours moved, but it requires a majority of the city council to approve it to be put on ballot for voters to vote on. And unfortunately, there are incentives for a majority to not support it!
