It really seems like there’s been a dramatic escalation in rhetoric — from an already completely unacceptable starting place — in the last week or two, and it’s been treated with a slight eyebrow raise (if that) by the press.

Yeah it makes sense. They've been telegraphing it with euphemism or just talking about it among the ranks of ordinary MAGA folks or at events that people could rationalize as being "fringe". So, now that it's maybe a coin flip it makes sense for a fascist movement to rapidly go all-in.
