I can’t ask her about her family or those early years in Sonora. I can’t ask if she wished she had had a career, or ask her to identify ppl in old photos. As my tía said, “Tantas experiencias no vividas de quienes estuvimos más lejos y con menos encuentros.”

I’ve been thinking about ways to honor her legacy, about what would have made her proud. Above all she wanted us to nurture our familial and cultural bonds, but I think she also wanted us to enjoy the freedom and agency that she didn’t have. And shoplift a little.
