It's not like we (society) talked about this and decided we'd sacrifice ground-based astronomy in exchange for internet access in remote areas. Musk and a few others did this unilaterally. It wasn't to help anyone. They did it to make a profit and consolidate control over critical infrastructure.
And we let them because they helped make the right people richer.
And there’s the key point. Control a key infrastructure. All they (in this case they = the techbros) is to make as much money as possible. If you can’t monitize it, there’s no point. The satellites are causing huge environmental damage when they deorbit as well.
Musk doesn't care about the environment, he doesn't care about free speech and the town square, he doesn't care about internet access in remote areas. He cares about his own weird fantasies, and about having power over people he doesn't like. The end.
Starlink is a significant proportion of SpaceX's launches. He's just playing three card monty with the money.
