I discovered it through the old US commercials for Red and Blue. There were a few, with the two I remember featuring 1) the animated Pokémon being tucked up by a vacuum, and 2) the Pokémon getting loaded onto a bus that got driven to a trash compactor and squashed down to a Gameboy.
