So much of our politics is designed to meet the emotional needs of older Americans. These people refuse to take Trump seriously because they *must* believe that in order to vote for him. Pundits feed this fantasy because taking Trump seriously would require them to do a different kind of journalism

One of the problems is that other countries have figured out that Trump will just blurt out random nonsense completely uncommitted to what he'll accept in negotiations. EU trade negotiators have to be salivating at the chance to fleece that clown for four more years.

I’ve thought on this a bunch and just keep coming back to somehow a sunk cost fallacy. But it’s not a car or an investment.

My octogenarian dad who has been financially supportive & loving to his trans & queer family members, has personally housed refugees & thinks we should have universal healthcare is voting Trump a 3rd time. He denies the reality of him & suddenly thinks free speech is the most revelevant issue. 😱🤯🤬😭

Also, I bet less than 3% of Trump voters that tariffs don't result in foreign companies or governments writing checks to the treasury department but instead co.e out of their pocket when they buy cars, appliances, and construction materials.

I'll give you everything except the "older Americans" part. There are plenty of 20 somethings who are doing the same thing. Especially among 20 something men. I don't doubt the numbers are higher among Gen xers and boomers which is probably your point I suppose.

This is how successful grifters have always worked. Get the victim so emotionally attached to the story that once confronted with the truth they become the grifter’s most loyal advocate. They can’t bear the thought that they’ve been taken in.
