you don't even need to bother with a different ruleset, because L5R's rules are genuinely pretty good - they hit the right balance of flexible/adaptable but also with tons of additional cruft for people who want it
I haven't played the recent edition - which looks better - but the previous edition's rules fell apart in long term play (after running two long campaigns of different editions) and shugenja in particular were absurdly broken.
