Working on a new print for #Spacetober - got out my old used copy of ‘Murmurs of Earth’ by Carl Sagan, about the Voyager Interstellar Record & more to think about the upcoming “Carl Sagan/Cosmos” prompt. 🐡🧪🔭 I ended up wanting to portray a different message sent into space: the Arecibo Message. 🧵

A table top with cutting mats and prints in various stages: there are two completed prints on white Japanese Obonai paper with a feathery sheen with the Arecibo Message printed in black like a pattern of pixels with some easily identifiable shapes like a human, satellite dish and double helix in a vertical rectangle along the right side with a vertical rectangle on the left as a starry space image with some swirling pinks and blues along with black. There is a third print only printed with the Arecibo Message. There is an inked plate for the space rectangle ready to print on top of a paper alignment jig. You can also see a roll of tape, open book and wooden spoon at the edges of the photo.

This is a small, variable edition. I like to try and capture the colours in outer space due to dust and nebulae by mixing ink right on my block, carved with the background stars. It gives the right feel and makes each print unique. 🧵2/2 #printmaking
