a national treasure
You heard about the “typing” sound in the title song? I didn’t think she could be cuter, then I heard that story.
...and, though it has nothing to do with 9 to 5, Dolly wrote "I will always love you" and "Jolene" on the same day. As a songwriter of no renown, I put that right up there helping to fund a COVID vaccine. OK, maybe not -right- up there.
She has an incredibly kind heart.
She is, I suspect, the very most beloved living American.
I have a good friend who knows everyone in the music biz (Steve Forbert calls to talk about how tough parenthood is). He got me backstage for Yes "Going for the One" afterparty. Seen everything, for decades. He swears that the Dolly Parton concert is the best show he's ever seen.
I'd like to see Ms Parton get the Gershwin Award for Songwriting as I believe it is one award she would really appreciate since she identifies most strongly as a "songteller" and she is a stellar songwriter. Give Dolly the Gershwin!!! So glad I saw her farewell performance in Boston.
"Dolly Parton's America" is an excellent podcast if you need a longform deep dive. Listened to it driving to the Great Smokies, where she's from. Incidentally, if you ever get to that area, Dollywood is an exceeded my expectations as a theme park, very novel rollercoasters.
