The most amazing thing here is that the victim is (hopefully was, after all that went down) one of their own supporters, a twice-Trump voter. All it did for them to turn on him was a combination of being seen as doing the “wrong” thing, and a cesspool of downright lies.
They just use something to ruin lives and change a news cycle for a week or two and then move on. The hurricane and "Harris didn't go there like Trump did!" is this week's move so they don't need Springfield right now but if they need to change the talk again, they'll use it again.
