Despite representing just 13% of journeys and being owned by 33% of households, cars take up more than half of the public space in Paris. Which is why Mayor Anne Hidalgo is removing 70,000 of its 140,000 on-street parking spaces, to make the city greener and more people-friendly. 🧵

People walk and cycle through the 20th arrondissement of Paris. Rather than cars in the on-street parking spaces, they are filled with trees, terraces, benches, playgrounds, and parked bikes.

The municipality is consulting residents on what they would like to see replace the 10 square metre parking places. Options include more trees and plants, vegetable allotments, composting areas, children’s playgrounds, bicycle parking areas, and public toilets, among many others.

It's so cool to see bold changes like these – changes that are in all of our best interests, even if not everyone can see it yet. Vive Paris!

Great in theory but my GP, who lives outside Paris and has health and mobility issues herself, can no longer park near her office

lmao. NYC has 2.9 million street parking spaces and people shit themselves to death whenever some tiny reduction is threatened, and then the city backs down. What a view into what NYC could have if it had a leader instead of the most bizarre corruption speedrunner.

Wow great photos! Just visited Paris a few weeks ago, though I didn’t stumble onto streets with this much beautiful greenery! One of the things I appreciated the most is how much quieter the city is. It felt so calm and peaceful walking through Paris’ streets compared to many other cities.
