Rotterdam has grown cycling by 45% in the past decade—good for a 28% modal share—which has put increased pressure on its public space and led to the creation of a Bicycle Parking Strategy in 2021, which called for the investment of €45 million to build 34,000 new spaces by 2040.
The brand new parking facility on Westewagenstraat is the third largest in Rotterdam. It has space for standard two-wheeled bicycles, bikes with a crate and/or child seat, and cargo bikes. There are also 16 free storage and charging points for e-bikes, as well as a public toilet.
Using very rough math, creating the same number of underground parking spaces for cars would cost somewhere in the ballpark of $2 billion.
