Protocols over platforms is kinda the key to getting back to what made old web good. RSS feeds are a good example - a common standard that undercuts the weaponised convenience of getting news sources from one corporate source. One of the reasons I’m cautiously optimistic about AT Proto/ActivityPub.

I was thinking of the old internet while poking through www.abelard.org . It’s personal, libertarian, and strangely artistic. It’s everything the web used to be.

I was surprised (and unconvinced) by your references to newspaper paywalls here as being part of all the other insidious problems of the web of 2024 you call out. Especially as you later go on to critique free platforms which rely on spammy ads or data harvesting to fund their product!
I'd love to see a search engine that specifically indexes the indie/small web.
