Due to killing an hour on find a grave I discovered that my relatives are from Alsace- but were German speaking- and now I’m in the middle of a 19th century identity crisis where I try to figure out if I’m French or German
IIRC, Alsace-Lorraine was under Prussian/German control from 1871 until 1918, but was fairly mixed for centuries before then. I guess you probably know that already.
Basically: mustache guy ensured that the pro-German sentiment in Alsace did not survive 1945.... Before that, it was an open question whether people there felt 🥐 or 🥨 .... There is still regional pride tho and efforts to use and revive the Alsatian language....
Please don't map modern nation-states into the past. What town, or farms around what town, are you from is a better fit.
Alsatian?
My dad's family were Volga Deutsche, and I've always considered that German and never once thought I was part Russian, so thanks for that. Lol
My closest French ancestor (Jean Baptiste Roueche) was from Belfort in the Alsace region. Drama!!
I worked with two women from the same city. One was Polish; the other was German. In a rare example of tact in my early 20s,I didn't ask any follow-up questions.
As someone who's a quarter Swedish with great-grandparents from the Åland Islands, I can identify.
Why not both
Have those folks in my family too but the general consensus among my relatives is that ours were German.
