It does feel like they want to lose. Or at least don't understand how much post-modern politics has changed the game. The inability of anyone in the democrat camp or media to point out that this is an event caused by Trump's own rhetoric is disappointing at best.
This guy's take seems quite reasonable (he's a professor of political science, so I'm more inclined to trust him than most people). I think lack of visibility, combined with the inevitable negativity from his camp will do far more harm to his campaign than good.

I think this is the thing that people prophesying doom are missing. Trump is likely to, in effect, stop in-person campaigning. Particularly as the shooter came from a group he sees as his base.
One of the biggest issues with people doing this is that it also demotivates people, so not only are they now feeling shitty, but also incapable of taking useful action that might improve things.
