“Halifax has been prioritizing wider paved roads and new parking lots over trees and vegetation, intensifying the heat island effect” Absolutely. This has to stop, now, but I don’t hear council candidates discussing it.
Is there anyone running for mayor that’s talking about this? I know some of the councillor candidates are but I’m not familiar with any of the mayoral candidates except 2 councillors running and Mr swooped in from Ottawa.
I saw that graphic and it really is shocking
That said I walked to Sobeys last night and was pleasantly surprised to see the new curbs going in on the south side of Almon St. are making the street MUCH narrower for cars. I’d say the curb extends about 10 feet further out from the buildings now.
I've been talking to people in D16 about over wide streets and why narrow streets with trees & active transportation are actually better for traffic calming than speed bumps. Does that count? :) Also talking to groups about saving our urban parks & forest.
I feel like so many problems could be fixed with more buses and promoting public transport. Want more green space? Reduce cars that need parking lots. More locations for housing? Make it easier to get around without cars. Better for environment? City transportation.
